Foreigners donated a record number of eye corneas in Sri Lanka

A total of 96,000 foreign nationals have donated eye corneas so far this year, according to the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society (SLEDS), with most of the donations sent to Egypt, followed by Lebanon, Pakistan, Iraq, Kenya, and 56 other countries.

SLEDS President Sampath De Silva told the media that Sri Lankans have contributed 59,374 cornea donations, reinforcing the country’s global reputation as a key contributor to vision-restoring surgeries.

He also noted that 2,246,002 individuals have registered for eye and tissue donations, marking a major milestone in Sri Lanka’s donation drive.

Additionally, 12,414 tissue donations have been made to support future medical treatments.

So far this year, 24,869 individuals have received eyeglasses, including 533 schoolchildren, and 2,200 eye surgeries have been successfully performed.
