Foreign tourists can now obtain driving licenses at Bandaranaike International Airport

Foreign tourists arriving in Sri Lanka can now obtain temporary driving licenses directly at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

The new on-arrival service counter was launched today to improve convenience for tourists, especially those renting vehicles near the airport.

Previously, tourists had to visit the Department of Motor Traffic in Werahera to obtain temporary driving permits.

The Ministry stated that most tourists use motorcycles, three-wheelers, and light vehicles to travel around the island.

However, the new licensing service at BIA will issue permits only for motorcycles and light vehicles.

Driving permits for heavy vehicles and three-wheelers will not be available through the airport counter.

To apply, tourists must present a valid full driving license from their home country; learner or provisional licenses will not be accepted.

If the license is not in English, a certified translation is required along with a valid passport and visa.

The foreign driving license must have at least one year of validity remaining from the date of conversion.

Temporary Sri Lankan driving licenses issued at the airport will be valid for up to five months.

Any restrictions noted on the original foreign license, such as the use of glasses or automatic vehicles, will be included in the Sri Lankan version.

A fee of Rs. 2,000 will be charged for each month of validity for the temporary license.
