
Foreign remittances sent by Sri Lankan migrant workers during the first two months of this year have increased by 32 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, Sri Lankan workers employed overseas remitted $1,480.1 million (approximately $1.4 billion) to Sri Lanka during the first two months of 2026, compared to $1,121 million received during the corresponding period last year.
In February 2026 alone, migrant workers sent $729 million in remittances, while the country received $548.1 million in February 2025. The Bureau stated that remittance inflows recorded a significant increase in February this year compared to the same month last year.
Meanwhile, a total of 47,819 Sri Lankans left the country for foreign employment during the first two months of this year. In addition, 3,241 workers obtained bureau registration for overseas employment between March 1 and 9.
