The recent arrest of an individual popularly known as “Dubai Sudda” should not be viewed merely as a social media controversy, but as a serious warning highlighting structural weaknesses in Sri Lanka’s overseas employment and migrant worker recruitment system.

United Vision Platform Founder Azzam Muhammedh said the incident reflects broader regulatory failures and gaps within the foreign employment sector that require urgent attention.
He stressed that foreign employment directly impacts human lives, family welfare, migration safety, and Sri Lanka’s foreign remittance economy, and therefore cannot be treated as an ordinary commercial activity.
Muhammedh also noted that the issue should not focus solely on individual wrongdoing, but should instead trigger a wider review of how unlicensed recruitment practices continue to operate alongside licensed agencies.
He further called for stronger enforcement, improved monitoring by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), and tighter regulation of recruitment activities on online platforms to prevent misuse and restore public trust in the sector.
