Five students from a private university have been arrested by Homagama Police in connection with the death of a 19-year-old student following a clash that occurred during a New Year (Avurudu) celebration held at a hotel in the Moragahahena area last evening.
Police said the arrest was made after receiving information about a death at the hotel, which prompted an immediate investigation.
The incident reportedly took place during a party organised by a group of private university students following the Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival, where an argument escalated into a violent clash.
A group of students from the same university was taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the attack.
The deceased has been identified as a 19-year-old resident of Nikadalupotha, Wellawa.
Homagama Police are continuing further investigations into the incident.
