The United States has made its Visa Bond Program permanent, requiring some travelers from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu to pay a refundable bond of up to US$20,000 before receiving a B1/B2 business or tourist visa.

The policy, first introduced as a pilot program in 2025, aims to reduce visa overstays and strengthen visa compliance.
Bond amounts may be US$10,000, US$15,000, or US$20,000, depending on the applicant’s circumstances, and are refundable if travelers comply with visa conditions and leave the US on time.
Furthermore, critics argue the measure could create a significant financial barrier for legitimate visitors.
