Fitbit update issued over injury concerns

Fitbit has issued a firmware update for select smartwatches following concerns about potential battery overheating.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced that the update is being rolled out for certain Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 models to address the issue.

An overheating battery could pose a safety risk, but Fitbit claims the new update “mitigates the risk” in affected devices, according to the ACCC’s Product Safety notice.

Owners do not need to return their devices; instead, they can check online to see if their watch is affected.

Not all Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 models are impacted, but if they are, the update will activate a new battery management system.

Once the firmware update is installed remotely, users can continue using their devices as normal.

Eligible customers may also check if they qualify for an appeasement from Fitbit, and they retain their consumer rights to a refund or replacement if necessary.
