Fierce winds and heavy rain lash Colombo, causing disruptions

Several areas in and around Colombo were severely affected last night as strong winds and heavy rain swept through the city, causing widespread damage and disruptions.

Trees were reported to have fallen across multiple locations, including Borella, Grandpass, Bambalapitiya, Dematagoda, Maradana, Jawatta, and Wellawatte, obstructing roads and damaging property.

In Grandpass, a fallen tree damaged five houses, while in Dematagoda, a wall collapse at a garment factory injured three people, including two women, who were later hospitalized.

The roof of the Bambalapitiya Police Barracks was also damaged due to the intense winds.

Emergency teams from the Colombo Municipal Council’s Fire Services, along with the police, were deployed to clear debris and restore normalcy.

Meanwhile, the Railway Control Room reported fallen trees blocking several major railway lines, including the coastal, main, Kelani Valley, and Puttalam lines. Clearing operations are ongoing, but train delays are expected on several routes, including the Main Line and Chilaw Line.
