Sri Lanka will decide whether to accept a US$62 million grant offered by India for the development of the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port based solely on the business feasibility of the project, Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Kodituwakku said yesterday.
The grant has been proposed by India for the development of the northern port, which is located in close proximity to the Indian coastline.
Speaking to the media the Deputy Minister stated that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority is currently conducting a feasibility study to assess the port’s potential.
“We will prepare a business plan, and based on that, we will determine whether to accept the grant,” he explained.
India has been pursuing a number of connectivity projects in Sri Lanka in recent years. The two countries have already signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for linking their power grids and establishing a multi-product petroleum pipeline.
In addition, a ferry service is currently operating between the two countries, further enhancing bilateral connectivity.
