Fate of world’s largest iceberg after 37 years

The world’s largest iceberg, named A23a, has started drifting again after 37 years.

This massive iceberg separated from an ice sheet along the Antarctic coast in 1986. Currently, it is approximately four times the size of Canberra, covering an area of 3,100 square kilometers and standing nearly 300 meters tall. Weighing around a trillion tons, it poses a significant environmental concern.

Environmentalists highlight that the region is home to large penguin populations and millions of marine creatures, and the iceberg’s movement could severely impact local ecosystems. Foreign media reports indicate that the iceberg is now stuck 80 kilometers away in the South Georgia Sea. Experts also warn that global warming is contributing to the melting of Antarctic ice sheets, further accelerating such events.
