Farah Rumy, 34, becomes first Sri Lankan-born member of Swiss Federal parliament

Farah Rumy, recently elected Second Vice-President of the National Council of Switzerland, has become the first Sri Lankan-born person to be elected to the Swiss Federal Parliament.

Family sources said she is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka early next year.

The 34-year-old Rumy, a nurse and medical expert, is a member of the Social Democratic Party. Her father is Mohamed “Rumy” Mohideen and her mother is Izfiya Rumy. She initially attended Bishop’s College in Colombo before relocating to Switzerland with her family in 1998 at the age of six.

Since 2021, Rumy has served as a Municipal Councilor for the city of Grenchen. She is also a member of the Naturalisation Commission, a board member of Spitex Grenchen, and serves on the Foundation Board of the Rodania Foundation, which supports people with disabilities. She has also held the position of co-president of the SP Migrants of the Canton of Solothurn.

In Parliament, her primary focus areas include health policy, social policy, foreign policy, and equal opportunities.

In December 2025, Rumy was elected Second Vice-President of the National Council, positioning her to potentially become President of the National Council in 2028, should she be re-elected in 2027.
