Facebook, Messenger launch safer accounts for under-16s

Starting today, Facebook and Messenger accounts of thousands of young Australians will automatically switch to new “Teen Accounts” for users under the age of 16.

This change aims to enhance online safety by introducing various restrictions tailored to protect teenagers.

Teen Accounts will feature content controls, message limits, and protections against inappropriate content and unwanted interactions.
Additional safeguards, such as screen time warnings, are also included to promote healthy social media habits.

Meanwhile, the company has announced plans to roll out more protections on Instagram, including a rule that will prevent users under 16 from joining Instagram Live without parental consent.
