Experts urge caution as lab-grown meat ends up on Australian tables

A number of experts and scientists have issued a note of caution as lab-grown meat reaches Australian tables.

Food Standards Australia is dealing with an application by the Vow Group to allow New Zealand to sell cell cultured quail meat as feed.

FSANZ said it had found no safety concerns and was in the process of determining how to regulate food grown in laboratories.

In a recent call for submissions, the agency proposed a standards-based approach that would allow Vows to manufacture and sell any cell-cultured food that passes a pre-market assessment by FSANZ.

FSANZ recommended labeling these foods as "cell cultured" or "cell cultured" to help consumers make informed choices.

But a number of area experts don't know how the public will react.
