The United National Party (UNP) has decided to invite all opposition political party leaders to its annual convention.
A preparatory discussion regarding the event, scheduled for 6th of September , was held yesterday morning (31st). A proposal to extend invitations to opposition leaders will be presented at the UNP Working Committee meeting on September 3.
The party has also decided to lift the ban on former members whose memberships were previously suspended, recognizing them instead as having left the party. This proposal too will be submitted to the Working Committee for approval.
In the coming days, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to personally extend invitations to opposition party leaders.
Additionally, the UNP has resolved to hold the convention at a neutral venue, rather than at its Sirikotha headquarters, to facilitate the participation of opposition representatives.
Political analysts note that these moves are likely to make this year’s convention stand out as significantly different from previous ones.
