Eta Aquarids meteor shower to peak on May 6

The annual Eta Aquarids meteor shower, one of the most anticipated celestial events of the year, is expected to peak on May 6, 2026, according to the Astronomy Division of the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies.

The meteor shower is active from April 18 to May ළමයි කඩේ යනවනේ අපි. යනවා. යනවා යනවා. 27 and originates from debris left behind by Halley’s Comet. As Earth passes through this trail of cosmic particles, the fragments enter the atmosphere at high speed and burn up, creating bright streaks of light known as meteors.

The shower appears to radiate from the constellation Aquarius, also known as the “Water Jar.”

Astronomy experts advise skywatchers to look towards the eastern horizon after around 2:00 a.m. on May 6 for the best viewing experience.

Under clear and dark skies, observers may witness between 40 to 85 meteors per hour at peak activity, depending on atmospheric and light conditions.

Experts further note that minimal light pollution and an unobstructed horizon will significantly improve visibility, making the early morning hours the most favourable time for viewing.
