Eta Aquarids meteor shower to peak next week

Stargazers are in for another treat as the Eta Aquarids meteor shower is expected to peak between 6th and 7th of May with up to 50 meteors visible per hour, according to NASA.

This annual meteor shower, active from 19th of April to 28th of May is best viewed from the Southern Hemisphere, giving Australians a prime opportunity to enjoy the show.

The Eta Aquarids originate from debris left behind by Comet Halley. As Earth passes through this trail, the particles enter our atmosphere at speeds of up to 65 km/s, producing bright streaks in the sky known as “glowing trains” that can last from seconds to minutes.

The shower is named after the star Eta Aquarii in the Aquarius constellation, the point from which the meteors appear to radiate.

To view the spectacle, look towards the eastern sky around 2am AEST on 7th of May for the best chance of spotting the meteors.
