Environment secretary says some scientific inventions are harming the environment

Environment Ministry Secretary K.R. Uduwawala stated that scientists, through some of their new inventions, are unintentionally contributing to environmental harm.

Speaking at the Presidential Environment Awards 2025 held yesterday at the BMICH, he pointed out that many scientists overlook the environmental impact of their innovations.

To address this, the Ministry of Environment plans to introduce a new initiative aimed at promoting environmentally friendly innovations.

Uduwawala said discussions are currently underway with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Environment to launch a concept titled “Green Research” in the near future.

“Through this concept, scientists will be encouraged to prioritize environmental protection when developing new inventions. Environmental damage should be prevented at the point of innovation,” he explained.

He added that several regulatory measures will be introduced under this initiative, aligning with international standards, circular economy practices, and carbon-neutral goals. These new rules and procedures will apply to eco-friendly products, services, and industries.

Explaining future applications, Uduwawala said passengers will eventually be able to see the carbon emissions of airlines when booking flights, and ships will move toward using zero-carbon harbours.

He emphasized the importance of balancing development and environmental protection to meet global demands. “Our aim is to find a middle ground through the development of sustainable energy systems,” he said.

Uduwawala also highlighted growing global concern about the environmental challenges posed by electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

“Sri Lanka is transitioning from fossil fuel vehicles to electric mobility. However, as EV batteries typically last only about ten years, we must plan ahead to manage electronic waste responsibly. Scientists and environmentalists must work together to find solutions,” he added.
