The Prisons Department has taken steps to provide special security for IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, who is currently in remand custody.
He is being held in a secure cell at Dumbara Prison in Pallekele, following court orders for enhanced protection.
Tennakoon was initially produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court and remanded for one day. He was then brought before the court again the next day, where the magistrate ordered his remand until 3rd of April.
The IGP has been charged in connection with the death of a Colombo Crimes Division officer, who was killed in a shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama, Matara, on 31st of December 2023.
