Election commission urges timely submission of additional member names

The National Election Commission of Sri Lanka has urged all political parties and independent groups to promptly submit the names of additional members to be appointed from their respective nomination lists.

Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake, emphasized that it is the responsibility of all contesting parties and groups to comply without delay. The names must be submitted in writing to the relevant District Returning Officers, following official procedures.

These appointments relate to the Local Government Elections and must align with the proportional representation system, based on the number of votes each party or group received.

The Commission stated that Returning Officers will make the appointments according to officially certified vote counts and party entitlements under the proportional system.

Ratnayake also noted that District Returning Officers already possess details for 60% of elected candidates. He called on party leaders to urgently provide the remaining 40% of names from their nomination lists.

He stressed the importance of completing this process promptly, as the new term of local government bodies is set to begin on 2nd of June
