Eight Sri Lankan athletes awarded Olympic solidarity scholarships

The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC Sri Lanka) held a comprehensive briefing for recipients of the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship under the IOC’s Los Angeles 2028 programme at Olympic House, Colombo 07. The session aimed to educate athletes on effective use of the scholarship and the importance of quarterly reporting.

Launched in September 2025, the scholarship programme runs through to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Six athletes receive a monthly stipend of USD 1,000, while World Athletics Championship finalist Rumesh Tharanga (Javelin Throw) and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Nethmi Ahinsa (Wrestling) receive USD 1,500 each. Other recipients include 2024 Olympic 400m semifinalist Aruna Darshana (Track and Field), Ranithma Liyanage (Badminton), Hiruki de Silva (Swimming), High Jumper Lesandu Arthavidu (Track and Field), 17-year-old middle-distance runner Tharushi Abhisheka (Track and Field), and Viren Nettasinghe (Badminton).

The briefing was led by members of the Independent Selection Committee, including veteran Sri Lankan sports figures Kapila Wijegunawardene and Srirantha Peries. They provided guidance on scholarship responsibilities, performance expectations, and the importance of transparency and accountability.

Committee members emphasized structured quarterly reporting, demonstrated best practices, and introduced a standardized reporting format for athletes and coaches. Motivational advice was also shared
