Early childhood care a social responsibility: Ministers

Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Paulraj said the standardisation and development of early childhood development has been identified as a key priority of her Ministry for 2026.

Speaking at the launch of the National Communication Programme for Child Health Promotion, she emphasised that preschool teachers play a crucial role in providing children with love, care, and a safe environment, which helps shape their values and social behaviour from an early age.

Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa said building a healthy future generation is a core objective of the government, particularly through the prevention of non-communicable diseases. He noted that children aged three to five today will be young adults by 2040, underscoring the importance of continuous early interventions to safeguard their future health.

Both ministers stressed that preschool and early childhood development centre teachers bear a significant responsibility in shaping the nation’s future through their vital role in early childhood care and education.
