Driver’s licence printing resumes as card shortage ends

The Department of Motor Traffic announced that the printing of driver’s licences, which had been suspended due to a shortage of printing cards, has now resumed.

According to the department, printing activities restarted last week, with a daily target of producing around 6,000 licences.

Nearly 350,000 licences had accumulated during the recent shortage. With new stocks of cards now in place, printing has recommenced, and the department aims to clear the backlog as quickly as possible.

The department also plans to issue new driver’s licences within 14 days of application. To support this, all district offices will be connected to an online system, and several offices have already been linked.

In addition to the Werahera main office, printing is currently underway at the Hambantota and Anuradhapura district offices, while the Kurunegala office is expected to begin printing soon.
