Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa elected President of SL–India parliamentary friendship association

Minister of Health and Mass Media and Chief Government Whip, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has been elected President of the Sri Lanka–India Parliamentary Friendship Association for the Tenth Parliament, according to the Department of Communications of Parliament.

The revival meeting of the Association took place on 8th of May, 2025, in Parliament, under the patronage of Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, and was attended by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha as the Guest of Honour.

The event saw the participation of key political figures including Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, several ministers, MPs, and the Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.

Dr. Kavinda Jayawardhana was elected Secretary of the Association during the session, which underscored the longstanding bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and India, and called for strengthened parliamentary cooperation through dialogue and exchange initiatives.

Speaker Wickramaratne praised India’s unwavering support during Sri Lanka’s crises and highlighted President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent visit to India as a milestone in bilateral ties.

He also welcomed India’s initiative to organize a Capacity Building Programme for newly elected Sri Lankan MPs later this month.

High Commissioner Santosh Jha reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in various sectors and reflected on the successful visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the island.

In his address, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa described the Association as a vital link between the two parliaments and expressed confidence in its role in deepening the already strong Sri Lanka–India relationship.

Dr. Kavinda Jayawardhana, delivering the vote of thanks, expressed gratitude for India’s continued friendship and reiterated Sri Lanka’s dedication to mutual cooperation.
