Dozens of residents evacuated as fire breaks out at Melbourne aged care home

Dozens of elderly residents were evacuated after a fire broke out at an aged care home in Melbourne’s south-east.

Multiple emergency services responded to the facility in Elsternwick shortly before 10.00 p.m. yesterday after a large blaze erupted.

A nurse and two residents were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. A family member of one of the hospitalized residents later told 9News that they are now recovering.

Roshana Care Group confirmed that the affected home, Graceland Manor, will remain closed while authorities and contractors carry out safety assessments and remediation work.

In a statement, the care provider said the fire occurred following an incident involving an exhaust vent, which affected the upper-floor roof area. It added that all residents and staff were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.

A total of 33 residents have been temporarily relocated to alternative aged care facilities and other suitable accommodation to ensure their safety and continuity of care.

Emergency crews moved residents to a nearby park during the evacuation, with some transported in wheelchairs by staff and first responders. Mattresses were also provided for those needing to rest.

Firefighters stated that the damage to the building is extensive, and residents will not be able to return until further notice.
