US President Donald Trump has announced that he will extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, just hours before it was set to expire, in an effort to allow continued peace talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

The war, which has lasted seven weeks and claimed thousands of lives, has also disrupted the global economy.

Trump said the extension followed a request from Pakistan, which has been mediating peace efforts, allowing time for Iran’s leadership to present a unified proposal for negotiations.

He also stated that Iran’s government is currently divided, referring to internal instability following the deaths of several senior leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was succeeded by his son.

In addition, Trump confirmed that the United States Navy will continue its blockade of Iranian ports and coastal areas, a move Iran has strongly condemned as an act of war.

However, it remains unclear whether Iran or Israel will agree to extend the ceasefire, which initially began two weeks ago.

Reports suggest that planned diplomatic talks involving US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian officials have been delayed, while Iranian sources indicated reluctance to continue negotiations under current conditions.

Iranian officials reportedly described the talks as unproductive, while some Iranian leaders accused the US of blocking any meaningful agreement.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the ceasefire extension, expressing hope that both sides will continue diplomatic efforts and work towards a lasting peace agreement.

He also stated that further talks are expected in Islamabad, although no confirmed schedule has yet been announced.
