Dilith criticizes government for abandoning SL’s inclusive nationalistic vision over UN resolution

Sarvajana Balaya leader and MP Dilith Jayaweera has demanded immediate explanations from the Sri Lankan government over what he called a “shocking betrayal” of the country’s allies who supported Sri Lanka against UNHRC resolutions.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Jayaweera criticized the government’s foreign policy execution, led by the Foreign Minister, as “disastrous” and said the government must answer to the nation’s 22 million citizens for undermining allies who had opposed the UN resolutions.

He further accused the delegation of showing “sheer weakness and incompetence” before the international community, claiming this reflects poor handling of national priorities.

Jayaweera described the government’s actions as a “complete abandonment of Sri Lanka’s inclusive nationalistic vision,” asserting that the misstep has come at a high cost to the country.

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) adopted the resolution titled Promoting Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka (A/HRC/60/L.1/Rev.1) without a vote. The resolution was introduced by the United Kingdom, Canada, Malawi, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.

Sri Lanka rejected the resolution, with Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Himalee Arunatilaka, reiterating the country’s opposition to expanding the UNHRC’s mandate and to establishing an external evidence-gathering mechanism under the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
