Digital National Identity Cards (NICs) will be issued by the end of this month, according to Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne.
As part of this initiative, all new NICs will be converted into a digital format to improve efficiency.
The shift to digital NICs is intended to address the significant delays in the current identity card issuance system.
The total cost of implementing the digital NIC system is estimated at Rs. 20 billion.
Deputy Minister Weeraratne reassured the public, stating that the Indian company involved in the technical setup will not have access to personal data, with the government maintaining exclusive access.
To ease the financial burden, India will assist by covering half of the project’s total cost.
