Digital education policy to reach cabinet by March 2026

Officials from the task force on digital transformation in education announced that a policy framework on digital education is expected to be submitted to the Cabinet for approval by March 2026.

This was revealed at a meeting of the Subcommittee under the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, held in Parliament on the 23rd, chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

During the meeting, task force officials presented the proposed plan, explaining that the digitalization process will focus on six key areas. They highlighted that the initiative aims to address teacher shortages, provide ICT equipment and resources, ensure the uninterrupted functioning of schools under challenging conditions, and enhance children’s learning experiences through digital technology.

The officials further stated that by December 31, 2025, all schools without internet facilities are expected to be connected, while schools lacking a digital smart board and at least one computer or laptop will be equipped with them.

Citing existing data, they revealed that three dual-mode schools in the country are without electricity, 546 schools lack a computer, laptop, or tablet, and 2,088 schools are without a digital smart board.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya stressed that this transformative initiative requires collective support, given the significant investments being made for the future. She urged stakeholders to submit constructive ideas and proposals to the Digital Task Force on Education Reform.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madhura Senevirathna, several Members of Parliament, and senior ministry officials, including Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Nalaka Kaluwawwe.
