Dentists are calling on the Australian government to urgently progress its long-delayed National Oral Health Plan, warning that untreated dental problems are affecting millions of Australians.

The Australian Dental Association says one in three Australian adults has untreated tooth decay, highlighting the growing impact of poor access to affordable dental care.

More than 2 million Australians have reportedly skipped or delayed dental treatment because they could not afford it, according to an ADA survey.

More than 40 dentists have traveled to Canberra this week to meet politicians and push for stronger action on the country’s dental health crisis.

Dentists warn that delaying treatment can lead to more serious problems, greater pain and significantly higher treatment costs.

The National Oral Health Plan 2025–2034 was developed following consultations with dental professionals in 2024, but the federal government has not yet finalized or released the plan.

The Australian Dental Association says oral health must become a stronger part of Australia’s broader health system and is urging the government to act on the long-awaited plan.
