Dengue mosquito most active in morning

Medical Research Institute (MRI) Entomology Officer Gayan Kumarasinghe stated on February 10 that research has shown the highest activity of the dengue-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquito occurs between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

He explained that the mosquito is less active in the evening and that most dengue infections occur due to bites received in the morning.

These findings are based on a year-long study conducted by MRI Director Dr. Suranga Dolamulla and Chief Specialist Dr. Rohitha Muthugala.

The research also revealed that the dengue mosquito adapts rapidly to its environment.

Kumarasinghe noted that the mosquito cannot see but locates humans by detecting body heat.

To prevent bites, he advised using citrus oil or perfumes as repellents and wearing clothing that covers the entire body.

Further studies will be conducted to understand how the dengue mosquito continues to adapt.
