Dengue infections in Sri Lanka have increased significantly this year compared to the same period in 2025, with reported cases rising by around 50 to 55 percent, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.

Director of the unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, stated that 36,168 dengue cases had been reported across the country as of June 5 this year, with nearly half of them recorded in the Western Province, making it the most affected region.

Health authorities also reported a notable number of cases from the Galle and Matara districts in the Southern Province, Ratnapura and Kegalle in the Sabaragamuwa Province, as well as Puttalam and Kandy districts, while attributing the surge partly to prolonged wet weather and post-Cyclone Ditwah waste accumulation that has increased mosquito breeding sites.

The National Dengue Control Unit has urged the public to stay vigilant and take preventive measures to eliminate stagnant water and other mosquito breeding grounds to help reduce the spread of the disease.
