Dengue cases surge again amid fresh outbreak concerns

Health authorities have reported a resurgence in the spread of dengue in Sri Lanka, attributing the spike to prevailing weather conditions.

In May alone, 6,042 dengue cases were recorded, marking a steady increase over recent months. March saw 3,766 reported cases, followed by 5,166 in April.

So far this year, a total of 23,744 dengue cases have been reported, along with 13 related fatalities, according to the Ministry of Health.

The National Dengue Control Unit identified Colombo, Gampaha, Ratnapura, and Batticaloa districts as high-risk zones, with the highest concentration of infections.

Authorities have warned that the current trends could lead to a significantly high-risk dengue environment in the coming weeks.

In addition, an uptick in Chikungunya cases has been noted, a virus also transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito—the same vector responsible for spreading dengue. Colombo District alone accounts for 63.4% of these cases.
