Death toll climbs after second major earthquake strikes Vanuatu

A second powerful earthquake has struck Vanuatu, causing further devastation.

The earthquake hit early this morning, leaving at least 14 people dead, according to reports.

This disaster follows yesterday’s 7.3 magnitude earthquake and is said to be the worst the region has experienced in recent days.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that several Australians were in areas affected by the first quake.

The Red Cross, citing government sources, reported the death toll at 14 earlier today.

Widespread damage to communication and infrastructure has disrupted official updates and telephone services.

An Australian aid team, including medical personnel and rescue workers, has now arrived in Vanuatu to assist.

More than 200 people have been injured, highlighting the immense toll of the disaster.
