Queensland has recorded its first suspected case of the deadly H5 bird flu in a wild seabird found on Moreton Island.

The infected bird, a migratory petrel, has been sent for confirmatory testing at CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.

Authorities say there is no evidence the virus has spread to poultry or native birds in Queensland.

Officials have also reassured the public that chicken, eggs and other poultry products remain safe to eat.

Residents are being urged not to touch sick or dead birds and to report sightings to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline.

The detection follows earlier H5 bird flu cases in Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales.

Wildlife experts say the virus poses a serious threat to seabird populations, although the current risk to the public remains low.
