Dayasiri Jayasekara urges opposition unity to form joint local councils

SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekara today called on all Opposition parties and independent groups to unite and form non-party councils in local bodies where they hold the majority.

Speaking to the media, he emphasized the need for unity against the National People’s Power (NPP), urging parties to set aside differences over positions like chairmanships and vice chairmanships.

Jayasekara cited the Panduwasnuwara Pradeshiya Sabha as a potential model, noting that while the NPP has secured only 17 seats, Opposition parties and independents collectively hold 21, making a non-party council feasible.

He proposed that all council chairmen and members take a pledge to reject fraud and corruption during their term of office.
