Dasun Shanaka urges fans to stand by players during tough times

Following widespread public anger after Sri Lanka’s heavy defeat to New Zealand at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday night, captain Dasun Shanaka apologised to fans and urged them not to lose faith in Sri Lanka Cricket or the players.

Shanaka said he shared the disappointment over the way the team’s World Cup campaign ended, noting that the squad entered the tournament with strong belief, clear plans and high expectations, despite setbacks including a prior series loss to England. As a co-hosting nation, he said he genuinely believed the team had the potential to recover and progress deep into the competition.

He acknowledged the frustration, hurt and anger felt by supporters, saying he understood the criticism directed at him and the team. However, he appealed to fans not to give up on Sri Lanka Cricket or the players who continue to work hard within the system to rebuild and uphold the country’s cricketing legacy.

Shanaka emphasised that losing is particularly painful when carrying the hopes of millions, adding that he accepts the criticism and emotional reactions as a reflection of the public’s deep passion for the game and the nation. He pledged to continue giving his fullest commitment on every occasion.

“I have always played this game with one purpose — Sri Lanka,” Shanaka said, apologising for not delivering the result supporters had hoped for and thanking them for standing by the team.
