Dasun Shanaka banned from PSL for one year over contract breach

Dasun Shanaka has been handed a one-year ban from the Pakistan Super League following a review into his withdrawal from the tournament.

The decision came after an investigation by the Pakistan Cricket Board, which found that Shanaka had breached his contract with Lahore Qalandars, who had signed him for the 2026 season.

Shanaka withdrew from the PSL on March 21 and was subsequently signed by Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League as a replacement for Sam Curran.

According to the PCB review, his unilateral withdrawal was deemed a clear violation of both the player registration terms and the tripartite agreement, as the reasons provided were not recognised under the contractual framework.

While the board acknowledged Shanaka’s apology and his expressed interest in playing in Pakistan, it said disciplinary action was necessary to protect the integrity and exclusivity of the league.

Shanaka, who recently captained Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup, expressed regret over his decision and apologised to fans and the broader cricket community.
