A major Australian university has been hit by a data breach, with the passwords of thousands of staff and students exposed.
The University of WA (UWA) has confirmed that it was investigating a cybersecurity incident last night and that password information was accessed without authorization.
Following the discovery, WA staff and students were asked to log out of the system and change their passwords.
However, UWA chief information officer Fiona Bishop said there was no evidence that any other information had been accessed and that investigations were ongoing.
The university has not had any communication from anyone responsible for the incident, and there is no indication that ransomware was involved, Fiona Bishop added.
She said UWA would continue to work on its cybersecurity measures.
She said that universities have also become increasingly cyber targets, as they are powerhouses of information and learning.
