Cricket at Olympics: ICC confirms 6-team format

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has welcomed the announcement of Fairgrounds in Pomona, Southern California, as the venue for cricket at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Cricket will return to the Olympics after 128 years, with six men’s and six women’s teams competing in the T20 format.

ICC Chair Jay Shah expressed his excitement over the venue confirmation and praised the opportunity to showcase cricket to new audiences.

Shah emphasized that the fast-paced T20 format is ideal for attracting global viewership and expanding the sport’s reach.

He thanked LA28 and the International Olympic Committee for supporting cricket’s inclusion and pledged close collaboration to ensure its success.

Cricket last featured in the Olympics in 1900 and was officially added to the LA28 program after an IOC meeting in Mumbai in 2023.

Cricket will be one of five new sports at LA28, joining baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash.

The T20 format has been part of other major multi-sport events, including the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

The ICC sees the Olympics as a major platform to grow the game and engage fans worldwide.
