Cranbourne Botanical Gardens named among world’s best

Two Australian botanical gardens have earned global recognition, being named among the top 25 “must-see” gardens in the world by The New York Times Style Magazine.

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne, Melbourne, and the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney were selected by a panel of six horticultural experts who reviewed and narrowed down gardens from their personal nominations.

Cranbourne’s garden, opened in 2012, is surrounded by 300 hectares of native bushland and features walking and cycling tracks, a lookout tower, and a rich array of plant and animal life, including over 215 species such as kangaroos and koalas.

Experts described the Cranbourne garden as more like a zoological experience than a traditional botanical garden due to the massive size and diversity of its flora.

Meanwhile, Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden, located in the heart of the city, offers panoramic views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and houses over 28,000 plant species, including an Oriental Garden showcasing flora from across Asia.

The gardens are not ranked in order, and the list also includes globally renowned locations such as New York City’s High Line, Kirstenbosch in Cape Town, and the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto.
