COVID-19 under control in SL despite surge in respiratory illnesses

Health authorities have confirmed that the COVID-19 situation in Sri Lanka remains under control despite a recent rise in respiratory illnesses across the country.

Dr. Athula Liyanapathirana, Consultant Community Physician at the Epidemiology Unit, stated that COVID-19 is currently monitored as part of the broader surveillance of respiratory infections.

He noted that while specific data on COVID-19 cases is not being separately collected, the overall situation is being closely observed.

According to Dr. Liyanapathirana, an increase in influenza and other respiratory infections has been noted during this period, prompting strengthened nationwide monitoring efforts.

The enhanced surveillance aims to detect and respond to any unusual trends or outbreaks in respiratory illnesses in a timely manner.

The public has been advised to remain cautious, maintain good respiratory hygiene, and seek medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or breathing difficulties occur.

Special attention is urged for high-risk groups including the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
