COVID-19 cases on the rise across Asia

COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise across parts of Asia, with Hong Kong and Singapore reporting significant spikes in infections, according to Bloomberg.

In Hong Kong, health authorities warn that the virus is spreading actively among the city’s 7 million residents. Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch at the Centre for Health Protection, stated that COVID-19 activity is currently “quite high,” with respiratory samples testing positive at the highest rate in a year.

Severe cases, including fatalities, have also surged, with 31 deaths reported in the week ending 3rd of May — the highest weekly toll in a year. Indicators such as increased COVID-19-related hospital visits and elevated viral loads in sewage point to extensive community transmission.

Singapore is facing a similar situation, with the Ministry of Health reporting a 28% week-on-week rise in cases, reaching approximately 14,200 infections in the week ending 3rd of May Hospitalizations have also increased by around 30%, raising concerns about mounting healthcare pressure in the densely populated city-state.
