

Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara has issued summons directing President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsecularatne and junior counsel Udara Muhandiram to appear before court on June 5 to provide evidence in the magisterial inquiry into the death of former SriLankan Airlines executive Kapila Chandrasena.

The inquiry relates to Chandrasena’s death, after he was found dead under suspicious circumstances at the residence of former cricketer Aravinda de Silva in Kollupitiya.
The Magistrate noted that no criminal offence has been disclosed so far in connection with the death and said the lawyers’ evidence is being sought regarding issues that arose in relation to bail arrangements.
The court further observed that lawyers may be called as witnesses while retaining their right to protect professional privilege and confidential communications with clients.
The summons were issued under Section 370(5) of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, with the matter scheduled to be taken up again on June 5.
