Despite another increase in the cost of the Australian passport to $422 from January 1, Australian travellers continue to enjoy one of the world’s most powerful passports, with visa-free access to 136 countries worldwide. However, those planning trips beyond the usual destinations should be aware that several countries still impose visa requirements on Australian citizens.
As of January 2026, Australians must obtain a visa in advance to enter 14 countries, mainly across Asia and Africa, including Afghanistan, North Korea, Russia and Sudan. These visas must be arranged through the relevant embassy or consulate before travel.
In addition, 29 countries require Australians to apply for an online eVisa prior to departure. These include popular destinations such as Brazil, India, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, where travellers can complete the process digitally.
A further 38 countries issue visas on arrival, typically requiring travellers to complete an application at the airport upon landing. Well-known destinations in this category include Indonesia, Cambodia, the Maldives and Tanzania.
While the Australian passport offers extensive global access, travellers are advised to check entry requirements carefully and plan ahead to ensure a smooth journey.
