The Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) for appearing unprepared before the committee.
As a result, the attending officials were sent back and instructed to return on a future date with adequate preparation.
This occurred during a recent COPA meeting at Parliament, chaired by MP Aravinda Senarath, to review Auditor General’s reports from 2020 to 2023 and assess the department’s current performance.
The committee inquired into the implementation of previous directives, particularly regarding 25 observations of illegal vehicle registrations before the Customs system integration.
COPA expected a report on investigations and disciplinary actions, but the Auditor General confirmed that no such report had been submitted.
Although officials claimed to have provided a report, the Auditor General stated he had not received it, and the copy presented during the session was deemed unsatisfactory.
The committee conducted a thorough inquiry, but officials failed to provide satisfactory responses, citing a lack of relevant past information.
In response, COPA criticized the officials’ conduct and decided to summon them again, emphasizing the need for proper preparation.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Ministers, committee members, and other state officials, as noted by the Parliamentary Communications Department.
