Contraceptive pill prices drop for some women

Starting this Saturday, the cost of the oral contraceptive pill will drop significantly for some Australian women as Yasmin and Yaz are added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

This marks the first oral contraceptive listing on the PBS in over 30 years and is part of the Albanese government’s broader investment in women’s health programs.

Yasmin and Yaz are commonly prescribed for women who experience acne, fluid retention, or weight gain.

Unlike older contraceptive pills, they contain drospirenone, a type of progesterone that, when combined with oestrogen, helps reduce acne while providing contraception.

They are also an option for women who experience side effects from other forms of the pill, such as headaches, breast soreness, or mood changes.

Currently, a three-month supply of Yasmin or Yaz costs around $79. From 1st of March , the price will drop to $31.60, saving women approximately $190 per year.

Concession cardholders will pay just $7.70 for three months or $30.80 annually.

Dr. Talat Uppal, a gynaecologist and Director of Women’s Health Road in Sydney, called the PBS listing a “milestone moment,” emphasizing that greater affordability will give women more choice and control over their reproductive health.
