The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) today filed a case before Colombo Additional Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathirana against a company based in Bambalapitiya for the illegal importation of unregistered medical devices.
According to the NMRA, the imported items included finger-prick blood glucose testing equipment, alcohol-based sanitisers, and medical plasters, all brought into the country without proper registration under the National Medicines Regulatory Authority Act No. 5 of 2015.
The NMRA emphasized that under the Act, any individual or entity importing medical devices must obtain a valid registration certificate prior to doing so.
An inspection conducted by the NMRA’s Regulatory Division revealed that the company had imported a large stock of unregistered medical items intended for distribution to pharmacies islandwide. Over 1,500 blood glucose monitoring devices were seized from the company’s premises during the raid.
The complaint was filed by Chief Food and Drug Inspector R.G.N. Wickramasinghe on behalf of the NMRA, naming Mohamed Ramzi of Farm Aid (Pvt) Ltd as the respondent.
Additional Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani issued notice for the respondent to appear in court on September 18.
