Colombo’s garbage piles up during festive season

The Colombo Municipal Council has reported an increase in garbage disposal within the city during the festive season.

Colombo Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara explained that the usual daily garbage collection of 450 tonnes is expected to rise to 500 tonnes by the end of the month due to the holiday period.

He noted that waste production in Colombo typically ranges between 420 and 450 tonnes daily, but the influx of people during the festive season is causing a slight uptick in waste generation.

“With more people arriving in Colombo by December 31, we predict that daily waste could reach around 500 tonnes,” Nanayakkara added.

In addition, the Director of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Ajith Gunawardena, highlighted that the large amounts of food being discarded have led to an increase in biodegradable waste.

Authorities are urging the public to manage waste responsibly during this busy time to reduce environmental impact.
