Colombo port’s East container terminal begins commercial operations

Operations at the third terminal of the Colombo Port’s East Container Terminal officially commenced yesterday (January 23), marking a significant milestone in the port’s expansion.

Three vessels operated by leading global shipping companies arrived at the terminal to inaugurate operations.

The terminal is equipped with 12 gantry cranes and 40 automated yard cranes, further strengthening the Colombo Port’s position as a key regional maritime hub.

Construction of the East Container Terminal began on January 12, 2022, and the facility spans 75 hectares with a total quay length of 1,320 meters.

So far, 1,090 meters of the quay and 82 percent of the overall construction work have been completed.

The East Container Terminal is expected to handle over 500,000 containers by 2025, and upon full completion, its annual handling capacity will increase to 1.5 million containers.

The project is being developed under the supervision and investment of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, with the objective of enhancing the operational capacity of the Colombo Port.

The commencement of operations also comes in the wake of public protests and controversy surrounding the East Container Terminal and the involvement of the Adani Group.
