Construction work on Phase 5 of the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) at the Colombo Port has officially commenced, marking a key milestone in expanding Sri Lanka’s maritime capacity.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) stated that the project will cover around 31,000 square metres of land and is expected to boost the terminal’s handling capacity by approximately 450,000 TEUs per month.
An investment of Rs. 750 million has been allocated for the project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
While Phase 4 has already been completed, the SLPA acknowledged challenges in providing adequate berthing facilities for longer vessels. Phase 5 is expected to address these issues and ensure more efficient vessel operations.
The SLPA expressed confidence that the completion of this phase will significantly enhance Sri Lanka’s competitiveness in regional maritime services, describing it as an important step in its long-term development strategy.
